Our Past Shapes Our Future

Alma Dea Morani

In fact, it never occurred to them that any women wanted to be surgeons.

Alma Dea Morani, MD, FACS, was the first female member of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. Her love of art, which she learned from her sculptor/father, Salvatore Morani, drew her to plastic surgery. She received her MD from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania and returned there to start her practice, rising to the rank of clinical professor of surgery. She continues to serve as an inspiration to young physicians, especially women, seeking to combine the skills of plastic surgery with an appreciation for the art of medicine. Support These Stories

So many women remain disconnected from their history as women in medicine because the collections aren't digitized or were never created in the first place.

Women's stories matter, and we need your help to ensure these stories are accessibly preserved and connected to what's happening today so we create a stronger future
